Third-party booking platforms are a real part of how most courses fill tee sheets. They provide reach, marketing exposure, and incremental volume that would be difficult to replicate independently. That value is genuine.
But distribution is never free — and the full cost is rarely visible in a single line item. Understanding what your current channel mix is actually costing you is one of the most underrated conversations in golf operations.
The visible and invisible costs
Some distribution costs are explicit: commission percentages, booking fees, flat monthly charges. Others are less obvious. Discounted inventory handed over as part of a platform agreement. Rates that appear lower on one channel than another without your knowledge. Customer relationships and booking data that accumulate on a platform rather than in your own systems.
None of this means third-party channels are the wrong choice. It means the decision deserves a clear-eyed look at what you are getting and what you are giving up.
The pricing anchor problem
Heavily discounted inventory — regardless of which channel it appears on — creates a price expectation in the market. Golfers who book at a promotional rate once tend to seek that rate again. Over time, a pattern of deep discounting in your market can make full-price inventory harder to sell, independent of demand. That is a brand positioning issue as much as a revenue one.
What independent data changes
The challenge for most operators is not that they are making bad decisions — it is that they are making decisions without the full picture. When you can see how your rates compare to the local market in real time, across every channel, you are in a fundamentally different position.
You can evaluate whether your current distribution agreements are filling genuine gaps or displacing higher-value bookings. You can have more informed conversations with platform partners. You can make channel mix decisions based on data rather than assumption.
That is not about abandoning any particular relationship. It is about knowing what you are working with.
